£6,000 fine for Cambridge HMO landlord

A Cambridge landlord has been prosecuted for putting tenants at risk by renting out an unsafe house in multiple occupation (HMO).

Maciej Wasiak of Lovell Road, Cambridge, was found guilty at Cambridge Magistrates Court on 18 June for failing to licence the HMO in Kings Hedges, for renting out a room previously prohibited for use for fire safety reasons and also for six offences under Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation Regulations 2006.

He was fined £6,000, ordered to pay full costs of £1,000 plus a victim surcharge of £120.

Environmental health officers from Cambridge City Council carried out inspections at the property on Lovell Road and found poor management throughout including blocked fire escapes and inadequate fire precautions along with a breach of a prohibition order that was served previously to prevent an unsafe room being used.

Cllr Kevin Price, executive councillor for housing, said: “This case gives a clear signal that the council will continue to protect the safety of tenants of privately rented properties by targeting the minority of landlords who continue to exploit some of the most vulnerable in Cambridge.”
