Landlord prosecuted for renting out ‘dangerous’ flats

A buy-to-let landlord has been prosecuted after three flats that he owns in Hull were found to be in a dangerous condition.

Private landlord David Reid was found guilty of inadequately maintaining a property in Morpeth Street, west Hull, which he has converted and rents out as three self-contained units.

Reid was convicted at Hull Magistrates Court and ordered to pay a fine of £660 and council costs of £707.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service referred the property to Hull City Council’s private housing service after they found it failing to comply with fire safety precautions.

The building waste in the front and back yards of the property were deemed a hazard by the council’s environmental health team, while the fire escape access for the flats was found to be obstructed and in need of repair.
