Landlord accused of stealing from tenants over unpaid rent row

A Shropshire-based landlord has been accused of stealing goods belong to his tenants after they refused to pay the rent or vacate the rental property.

A jury at Shrewsbury Crown Court has heard that Mohammed Choudhary, 63, removed electrical goods from the house in Wrekin View, Madeley, which according to the Shropshire Star included a TV and DVD, along with a guitar and items of jewellery.

Choudhary, who is said to have received assistance from Karen McManus, 52, allegedly stole the items from his tenants in July last year following a dispute over unpaid rent.

Tenants Deborah Jones and Mark Neeson, who had withheld rent payments, claimed they were warned by McManus to leave or face the consequences.

Choudhary, of St Helier Drive in Lawley Bank, Telford, and McManus, of Waterloo Road in Edgmond, Newport, both deny an allegation of theft. But a neighbour told the court this week that he witnessed the landlord putting items on the driveway, while the rear kitchen window to the rental property was open.

We will report on the outcome of the trial.
