Landlords fined almost £14,000 for health and safety problems

Two landlords in Reading have been fined almost £14,000 for failing to put right a string of housing offences at a property in Reading.

Anuroop Tyagi and Sajad Bashier were jointly charged with numerous offences relating to a HMO property on Oxford Road that they owned and managed, including mouldy walls, a broken fire alarm, and blocked fire escape.

Despite numerous warnings, the pair continued to ignore the rules, and after finally deeming the property to be in a state of disrepair, council housing officers decided to take action.

Anuroop Tyagi, of Oxford Road, and Sajad Bashier, of Basingstoke Road, were jointly charged with 23 offences in relation to the property.

“Most private landlords are responsible, but this case shows the council will take action to protect individuals who are forced to live in shameful conditions,” said councillor Richard Davies, Reading Borough Council’s lead member for housing.

Tyagi failed to attend and the case at Reading Magistrate’s Court, and so it was heard in his absence, with the court choosing to impose a heavier sentence on the latter as a consequence.

Tyagi was fined £400 for each of the 23 offences and ordered to pay £1,826.50 in costs, totalling £11,026.50.

Bashier was fined £100 for each offence and ordered to pay costs of £500, totalling £2,800.
