Criminal landlords across London will be named and shamed on an online database after all London boroughs signed up to a rogue landlord checker, which also exposes unscrupulous letting agents.
The database, designed to protect private renters in London, lists landlords and letting agents who have been prosecuted for housing offences, enabling renters to check up on landlords and agents.
The platform, which launched last autumn, will now obtain information from councils across London.
Initially, just six councils had signed up to the scheme, which was first announced by the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, just over a year ago. They were Newham, Brent, Camden, Southwark, Kingston and Sutton.
“I'm confident this [database] will be a major step in tackling unscrupulous and illegal practices in the rented sector,” said Khan.
In addition to Khan’s efforts to improve conditions in the private rented sector, he also launched last year a property portal on City Hall’s website, which advertises affordable homes on the rental and sales market in the capital.
“I refuse to stand by as thousands of Londoners suffer sky-high rents and horrendous living conditions in a city they call home,” he said at the time of the launch.
