Christopher Pincher replaces Esther McVey as the new ...

Boris Johnson has unveiled his new look cabinet, which includes the appointment of Christopher Pincher as the new housing minister.

Pincher replaces Esther McVey, who has been sacked from the position after just over six months in the role.

McVey said on Twitter: “I’m very sorry to be relieved of my duties as housing minister. I wish my successor the very best and every success.

“I’m very grateful to the Prime Minister for having given me the opportunity to serve in his government and he will continue to have my support from the back benches.”

Pincher, aged 50, was previously a minister in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the deputy chief whip of the Conservative Party.

Landlords and property professionals, including most letting agents, are understandably frustrated by the merry-go-round of housing ministers, with Pincher becoming the 18th MP to hold this role in 20 years.

Mark Hayward, chief executive, NAEA Propertymark and David Cox, chief executive, ARLA Propertymark, issued a joint statement: “We welcome Christopher Pincher as the new Housing Minister. Unfortunately, the lack of continuity in this post and the persistent changes means it’s near impossible for anyone in the role to make an impact.

“Fixing the broken housing market should be the priority, and there’s a number of consultations and policy that requires action – most importantly the Regulation of Property Agents. We look forward to working with the new minister on these important changes to the industry.”
