Renting is now Long Term - whether tenants want it or not

Renting is becoming increasingly long-term, a new survey suggests.

Monta Capital asked 1,586 UK renters about their experiences.

Some 24% have been renting for 6-10 years; 22% have been renting for 10-15 years; 13% have been renting for up to 20 years; and 20% have been renting for more than 20 years.

While renters are renting for long periods, few do so through choice: 85% say they are renting through necessity, with just 15% saying that renting is a choice.

Tenant frustrations revealed by the survey include the overall cost of renting which 33% of tenants cite as their biggest concern; 35% were unhappy with the uncertainty behind renting; and 41% wanted longer tenancies.

When renters are asked if they have any plans to one day buy their own home, 43% say no. And by far the most common reason why they have no plans to buy a home is because they can’t see themselves ever being able to afford it (70%).

Of the 57% who say they do have ownership aspirations, 19% say it will be up to 10 years before they think about doing so, and even then only 59% believe they’ll actually be able to achieve home ownership within this timeframe.

    Well will renting even be a possibility going forward? No. Landlords will sell. Also Tenants won’t move so there’s nowhere to move in to. Our boat people are given more money than councils so they get home and 4 and 5 star hotels first. Which begs the question where will we be able to go on holiday in the U.K.? No airbnb’s too. I’m going to have to buy a caravan 🤦🏻‍♂️

    In a few months the government have managed to completely destroy PRS, Short Term Lets and by default hit tourism. This will hit the treasury hard in terms of tax take.

    On the other hand it will help the economies of Southern Europe with everyone going for cheeky weekends somewhere warm.

    Amazing really that the UK does not want tourism and the weekend getawayers as Gove & Hunt have taxed AirBnB to death and all the hotels are full of people who arrived on inflatable buses.

    I can bet the 15% who say they rent through choice, did so long before the current crazy market 😱 It’s doubtful they would make the same choice now 🫣💰🫣💵

    It’s the old adage- why does the gov have to touch the system which works Well. Yes there are some who need to be ousted or taken to one side and given a dressing down. But don’t penalise the many cos of the few. Or do they have to make themselves think they earn the 5% pay increase.! Bl oo dy terrible.

    How can the Renters Reform Bill make it long term when it will put everyone on Periodic Tenancies running from one month to the next?

    Because they aren't periodic unless the tenant wants it to be. They can give notice. The landlord cannot. They won't have anywhere to go so they won't give notice. Even if they did, they occupy the landlord's property. So they will move out and move a family member or friend in.
