This only fully applies to profits over £250,000 not turnover. like the landlord specific accounting madness. Profits less than £50,000 still pay the 19% with a marginal rate being charged between £50k and £250k, so to be fair it is still better than being charged under the personal ownership route. For most small landlords with a couple of properties they will have to earn a sizable amount for this to actually effect than.

I have never heard anything more farcical. There are only two things that influence the direction of government 1. Money 2. A loud voice Unless they are going to start paying lots of money to unscrupulous people to influence policy, they will get nowhere, because 30 members do not have a loud enough voice. I doubt very much that there are the actual numbers of LLs that have 75+ properties to make that voice even remotely loud enough for a Government to hear let alone actually listen.

I think it is more badly written. My guess is it is 14 per 100,000 of random population not 100.000 landlords. If that same 100,000 random population had a landlord rate of 28 per 100,000 then it could be 50% of the landlord population who are at it.. But if the landlord rate is 1,000 per 100,000 then as you say this is very much a none story as it is a mere 1.4% of landlords. There is insufficient information to know for certain whether this is something or nothing.

What about all the tenants who have scraped by paying their rent during this period. They don't have any arrears so will receive nothing. Whilst SOME tenants obviously cannot help being in arrears there will be many who have seen the pandemic as an opportunity to not pay and they will just pick up this nice reward for being bad with money whilst the responsible ones will be penalised by their absence from this fund. Once again we reward bad behaviour and punish the good, this is the society we live in and one that will continue to set a precedent for the future. Don't get me wrong I would love the money to clear my rent arrears book, I just don't think this is the right way for the reasons above. How about a student type loan that just lives with them for 30 years? At least that way it wasn't entirely free money and if they get back on their feet they can repay it like everyone else has to in society.

Worse still the current system also has the effect of limiting a renters ability to save for a home as the rent takes up most of their disposable income. As taxes and the true cost of legislation on landlords increases, their need to raise more revenue to meet the rising cost puts yet more pressure on rent and therefore tenants. This in turn puts them further and further away from homeownership.
