Landlord accreditation scheme scrapped because it “didn’t work”

A council has scrapped a rental accreditation scheme because it “didn’t work.”

It attracted only good landlords and thus did not improve housing standards in properties owned by less conscientious landlords.

The Stoke-on-Trent Live news website reports that the council will save £34,000 a year by scrapping the scheme, which it says worked as an advice service to landlords.

A council spokesperson is quoted saying: “Things have changed over the years. All the information that the accreditation scheme hands out to its members is freely available online, and so membership has dropped in recent years

"Since Covid, no in-person meetings have taken place. Only good landlords sign up to the scheme.

“It's the bad ones we need to get after, and the housing team at the city council, and the borough council, already have powers to go after bad landlords. That's where we should be concentrating our efforts."

Public sector - doesn't work - full stop

Great post. Bad landlords never volunteer to be prosecuted, why would they. Responsible landlords are the ones who go for accreditation. Good to see a council recognising this.

    Send that to ACORN!

Now if only more councils could get this level of common sense… 🤔 unlikely.

I was accredited for many, many years with the NLA scheme. The modules in the landlord library were excellent and something that could easily be accessed not just for accreditation purposes. The different ways in which accreditation points could be obtained made accreditation something that with a bit of organisation could realistically be maintained year after year.
The replacement RNLA scheme is just overly complicated and expensive.

Patrick, rubbish post by Rogue’s, Crooks & Gangster’s just another Computerised extortion racket.
Why would you need to be Accredited unless you have something to hide another Ponzi scheme to put a false feather in your cap. Oh! bring in a Redress Scheme to Redress whom the one’s that’s owed nothing. Ah! Yes we must have an Ombudsman to stitch us up properly. I thought we had First
Tier for that. Patrick how many do you house ???.
So sorry for ever being a landlord.

Michael, have you actually read Patrick's comment (and the original post, which is about scrapping an accreditation scheme)?
I can't see how his comment is rubbish.

I was Accredited too for years with 2 different Organisations, the NLA before amalgamation and other one London Landlord Accreditation Scheme, don’t the Courses paid the fees wasted my days to learn something that I had been doing for decades before they existed. I said was Accredited because they keeps expiring and you at expected to keep jumping through hoops for the next thing they dreamt up.

Was accredited with the DASH scheme in Nottingham what a waste of time and money. Even my tenants were not interested, when inspections were required they declined so DASH said they couldn’t accredit me! Wouldn’t refund the feee eithe.

I joined DASH when it was free in order to get the discount off the SL fee. Now they charge £100 for every 3 years its not really worth it. But I do wonder how DASH can do it for £100 for 3 years & NCC want £820 for 5 years.

Why would any landlord ever go to a Council for advice?
