Council boasts of fining HMO landlords over £200,000

Landlords across just one London borough who failed to license HMOs have been issued with fines amounting to £207,500.

To date, 59 warnings have been handed out by Haringey council to landlords who have let unlicensed HMO property to at least three people who are not from the same household but share facilities like a bathroom and kitchen.

Some 43 of these notices resulted into fines.

A Haringey council statement says that with the use of Civil Penalty Notices, the fines have helped “strengthen the private rented sector and protect residents in the borough.”

Councillor Sarah Williams, Cabinet Member for Housing Services, Private Renters and Planning, says: “We will do everything in our power to protect our residents in the private rented sector in Haringey. Our HMO licensing scheme provides us with an even better platform to do this.

“Whilst we continue this journey to improve housing standards across the borough, we will fight for renters’ rights and ensure residents across Haringey live in homes that are well managed, of good quality and most of all, safe.

“Landlords who fail to comply will face tough enforcement action. Rogue landlords will not be tolerated in Haringey.”

I don't know why you post this story as you will soon take down the comments section.
The good landlords know exactly what goes on with these HMOs in London, and frankly the Council is 💯% right to deal with these people who give the likes of Shelter ammunition to tar the entire sector with the same brush.

Yet again, local authorities peddling the same old rubbish about improving standards and fighting for tenant's rights.
Yet again a story about authorities fining landlords for not paying to join their club with no mention of any of those landlords breaching any regulations, legislation or safety standards?!
As we have seen with Birmingham, local authorities simply cannot manage their finances yet keep milking the public for more!

  • Peter Why Do I Bother

Is this the one that Lammy is involved with? Labour council by any chance?

Haringey Council in cloud Cuckoo land, why would anyone believe Council robbing Landlords finance’s will improve PRS or help the Tenants, it’s just to inflate their Bank Balance, as for helping Tenants the opposite is true driving up their Rents 20/30% and that’s even if they can find any Place with Landlords exiting because of Council’s extortion racket, nice little earner.
