Big cash incentives for landlords hosting Ukranian refugees

An appeal for private landlords to come forward with vacant, or soon-to-be vacant, properties for rent, has been launched.

Accommodation is now needed across Somerset as part of a plan by local authorities in the county to move Ukranians out of sponsor accommodation and into private accommodation.

Somerset councils are offering a one-off cash incentive of £1,000 per bedroom, with up to a maximum of £4,000 for homes with four bedrooms and above.

Landlords will be asked to sign up Ukrainian tenants for a minimum 12-month term on a self-contained assured shorthold tenancy basis. They must also agree to a rent that sits within Local Housing Allowance rates.

This housing initiative is only available to households who arrived in the UK via the Homes 4 Ukraine scheme and supports access to the private rented sector for Ukrainian households who may find it difficult to access accommodation without employment references or a guarantor.

A council spokesperson says: “We know that most hosts in Somerset are happy to continue with current arrangements, to support Ukrainians living with them. However a small proportion of these are now coming to an end.

“Given the market conditions for rental costs and the challenging housing supply, options are limited. And yet we know there are privately-owned empty properties that can be utilised to support our Ukrainian friends in Somerset.

“In order for us to house refugees, we need those generous landlords to come forward to offer accommodation. We very much hope they will respond to our appeal.”

“We believe everyone deserves a safe and comfortable home. We will continue to seek new and innovative ways to house refugees because Somerset has a proud tradition of offering sanctuary to families fleeing war.”

Housing teams at the four district councils - Mendip, Sedgemoor, Somerset West and Taunton, and South Somerset - are working together to roll-out the county’s pilot initiative.

If you can offer a suitable property please contact srht@sedgemoor.gov.uk or housing.admin@mendip.gov.uk. Call 0300 303 8588 for further details.

What about the indigenous population on the waiting list ??

About time this country looked after it's own for once

You can't say stuff like that these days George. Any immigrant is above a UK citizen who had paid into the welfare state all their lives. Apparently they are entitled to it all!

Nick - I think you'll find many of the 'indigenous' population wanting to be housed by the council have paid very little into the system but take plenty out.

The Ukrainians who have come here are fleeing war and are mostly women & children. It is sad that the Councils have to try such drastic measures to get them a home in possibly the tightest rental market we have ever seen, but I absolutely support their right to be here & to be supported by our Govt & the general population. Much of Ukraine is currently on intermittent electricity & water supplies and winter temperatures are dropping. A little compassion is required here as families try to rebuild a life whilst their men folk live in a war zone.

Tricia - I agree many (the vast majority) are there ready to take out having not paid in. I just didn't want to dilute my overall comment about UK citizens being below foreigners.

I am happy Ukrainians are allowed to come here too - they have a genuine reason.

I basically agree with you Tricia, However I/we are not charities, If the government was prepared to rent one of my properties on a commercial full repairing and insuring basis at a full market rent I might talk to them, anything less is a big fat NO

What a total mess this country is. How far we have fallen.

    icon

We have much further to fall with the likes of Gove & Co in government. Not to mention Labour getting in (can't see it would be much worse).

Oh’ you gave years attacking the Sector by every means possible destroying and criminalising the providers, so now you would like them to take you out of the sh:t.

  • icon

So now you need us we are "generous landlords" and not greedy any more?? Hilarious!!

You'd be insane to let anything at Somerset's derisory LHA rents. £800 a month for a 4 bedroom house!!!!!
Demand for rentals is huge due to Hinckley Point.

LHA rates, good luck with that on, unemployed tenants and no guarantor, LOL
