Government pledges help for landlords with anti-social tenants

The government has accepted proposals from the National Residential Landlords Association to tackle anti-social tenants causing misery for neighbours and fellow tenants alike.

Delivering her first speech as housing minister for the private rented sector to the NRLA’s annual conference, Felicity Buchan MP said the government’s ambition was to strengthen the grounds enabling landlords to tackle anti-social behaviour when Section 21 repossessions are scrapped under the Renters Reform Bill to be presented to parliament in the near future.

The minister accepted the NRLA’s proposal to convene a meeting of key stakeholders representing landlords, tenants, the police, local authorities and others to develop plans to ensure swift and effective action can be taken against anti-social tenants.

Buchan outlined the government’s commitment to ensure its plans to reform the private rented sector work for responsible landlords as well as tenants, and claimed her government understood concerns about the impact its plans could have on the student housing market. Likewise, she made clear the importance of the court system working “properly and efficiently” when Section 21 is abolished.

Buchan went on to reiterate the policies outlined in the past by former junior minister Eddie Hughes MP, that there would be no rent controls in England. She said such controls would lead to “disinvestment in the sector, which is not good for anyone”.

NRLA chief executive Ben Beadle says: “The NRLA has made clear that more needs to be done to ensure the behaviour of anti-social tenants can be tackled effectively when Section 21 goes. 

“We therefore welcome the minister’s acceptance of our proposal for a roundtable on the issue. It is vital that all key stakeholders representing landlords, tenants, the police and others can develop clear and workable plans to ensure neighbours and fellow tenants alike are not left at the mercy of nightmare tenants.”

    Personally, whether or not they make it easier to remove anti-social tenants, I have no intention of letting my properties on an indefinite basis to any tenant. If that means selling everything, so be it.

    Me too. It’s or property and our rules. It all sounds good what they say but the agenda is all anti landlord anyway.

    Having meetings… The public sector love meetings,
    Waste lots of time and achieve little or nothing. How many meetings have been held on stopping people sticking themselves
    To the M25 and Van Gough?? What have they achieved?? Nothing. The same with securing our borders. And Brexit.

    No thanks I’ll keep my s21 or I am out.

    I am still out. I work in a job that brings me into direct contact with them…. I have little trust in the courts !!

    Sadly I too find the courts to be totally unfit for purpose, slow, cumbersome and unpredictable.

    I have decided to sell one property with my Nigerian benefit migrants. Why? Endless repair issues. So in an effort to minimalise any defences selling helps. Why? Because I don’t trust the courts.

    They will set up a DPS style tenant/Landlord separate court system. Will be biased against the LL

    Regarding the DPS comment above this is my view on the proposed ‘independent’ ombudsman. Just about all disputes will be lost by landlords.

    well Felicity wont have much of a job enabling landlords to tackle anti-social behaviour when Section 21 repossessions are scrapped as there wont be any Private LL's left

    There is one answer only to anti social tenants and it's not night school!
    Bring back section 21.
    The lesson to life is consequences.

    Trouble is Elizabeth there are no consequences for anti social thugs, police worse than useless just don't want to know, on the odd occasion that they might get them into court they get a slap on the wrist and a fine which is never paid, is it any wounder that most of now have zero respect for police or courts

    One thing that has become very clear from landlords responses again & again is they have no confidence in the Authorities that govern them or the sector as a whole, very sad. So instead of trying to get landlords on board we have Mr Michael Gove anti-landlord Minister bringing in THE WHITE PAPER to demean and alienate landlords further even though there are landlords exiting in droves due to him mainly and removal of Section 21 the very foundation of all private lettings creating more homelessness. He seems to be enjoying this, was he not the Author of the anti landlords White Paper, (so called levelling up creating more divisions) He is not a fit person to hold this Office.

    As a new day dawns we have a new Housing Minister.

    Unfortunately nothing new will dawn in the Housing Minister's knowledge and nothing (new or otherwise) will be done to solve the housing problem mainly caused by previous Housing Ministers listening to the rabble rousers and ignoring the housing providers.
