Shock Horror! Big majority of tenants are happy with their landlords!

Campaigners often like to portray relations between tenants and landlords as poor, but a new survey suggests this is far from the truth.

The study was large - 2,000 tenants - and showed that 81 per cent were either ‘very satisfied or satisfied” with their landlord. Only eight per cent were ‘very unsatisfied or unsatisfied’ and 10 per cent did not express a view either way.

Some 43 per cent said that they usually have to wait no more than three days for a response from their landlord when hey raise a query; over 10 per cent had to wait at least a week, while three per cent said their landlord can take over a month to get back to them.

The same survey, by the comparative website Money, shows that 79 per cent of private tenants believe their landlords listen to them when they raise complaints; and 82 per cent say repairs and completed within four weeks (26 per cent actually within one week).

There’s an interesting breakdown by age in the section of the study which looks at lost deposits.

Some 63 per cent of people said that they have lost at least some money to deposits during their time renting. While many said they had lost less, 15 per cent said that they had lost more than £500 while renting.

Tenants aged 18 to 24 are the group most likely to have lost a deposit, with 74 per cent having lost some or all of their deposit. This compares to just 38 per cent of those 55 and over.

The research was conducted towards the end of 2022 but details have only just been released. You can see the findings in full here - there is substantial information about affordability and ‘hotspots’ in the early part of the results, with the satisfaction data towards the bottom.

Tenants aged 18 to 24 are the group most likely to have "lost a deposit".

Well quelle surprise, "damaged the property" via Newspeak becomes "lost a deposit".
