Airbnb says the party's over on New Year’s Eve

In a bid to show it is clamping down on raucous guests, Airbnb has released details of thousands of parties it claims to have stopped at short let properties across the UK.

A statement from the platform says: “We know the overwhelming majority of guests are respectful neighbours and travellers, and that the vast majority of Hosts share their homes responsibly. Equally, we are committed to reducing instances of unauthorised parties and helping Hosts protect against neighbourhood disruption, and certain times of year, like New Years’ Eve, can attract a higher risk of unauthorised or disruptive parties.

“To that end, we are introducing restrictions on certain types of bookings over New Year’s Eve. These restrictions will see a ban on one-night bookings of entire home listings for guests without a positive account history - or no previous bookings at all - on the platform. We’re also introducing tighter restrictions for those same guests who try to book two- and three-night reservations, with an emphasis on attempts to book locally.”

It claims to have stopped thousands of New Year parties planned across the country. 

Specifically these were in Bath (over 600); Belfast (over 350); Brighton (850); Bristol (650); Cardiff (350); Edinburgh (800); York (450); Glasgow (700); Birmingham (750); Liverpool (400); and Sheffield (200). 

It says that in Manchester it’s stopped over 1,350 parties and across London no fewer than 7,800.

An Airbnb spokesperson says: “Stays take place across the world each night on Airbnb, with the overwhelming majority of guests and Hosts being respectful of neighbours and delivering benefits to their local community. These proactive defences will help to promote responsible travel and help to prevent rare instances of unwelcome behaviour, and enable Hosts, guests and communities to enjoy their end of year celebrations with added reassurance.”

    Just stop air bnb full stop

    Total blight on the community imo and should be banned asap

    I'm strongly opposed to a large section of Airbnb. In the wrong property it can be hell for the neighbours.
    The only types I can see any merit in are good old fashioned B&B where someone lets out their spare room in their own home and is present to serve breakfast. Also purpose built holiday homes on holiday complexes and quaint old cottages with very poor EPCs that would be horrible to live in long term.

    I also agree with Michael that if Section 21 was left alone and Section 24 was abolished there wouldn't be much point in doing Airbnb.

    You have no idea what you are talking about! I have rented my own home - just bedrooms for 8 years. I have working people, wedding guests, sports people and I offer accommodation where there is limited alternatives as I am in the country. I provide a service in the same way that you do for the PRS - don't end up damming something you don't understand. You will just be like the Government!

    George my friend why not ban the deliberate causes of the switch, Section 24, Section 21. We are being Regulated / Taxes / Licensed and Penalised out of existence if you are not a London landlord it probably didn’t hit home yet.

    I love Airbnb. Have changed the use of 3 of my properties to short term lets primarily using Airbnb and I'm quids in And more importantly, I have full control of my investments. What's not to like? I'm running my 'business' to make a profit, not to be a charity case and if short term lets are the way forward at the moment, then so be it. Recommended.

    If you have the right kind of properties in the right areas then why not, doubt any of mine would be suitable though
