Unfair! Landlords say they’re wrongly portrayed by the media

Unsurprisingly an overwhelming 81 per cent of landlords in a survey feel they are badly portrayed by the media

Landlords say they feel demonised and their important role providing housing is not recognised by the mainstream media, who instead portray them as greedy investors raising rents.

When asked if they agreed with the statement that the media portrayal is fair and accurate, one third of landlords strongly disagreed, while almost half disagreed.

One landlord out of the 1,200-plus surveyed, says: “The private rental sector provides much needed homes that are not being built by councils. I am a good landlord but I am fed up with being portrayed as someone who has plenty of money and is profiteering off tenants. What would happen if most landlords sold their properties?”

Another comments: “It would be good if the media was more balanced and also portrayed the issues for landlords with problem tenants.”

The findings form part of Landbay’s latest quarterly survey which questions existing landlords on various topics to determine their attitude and intentions.

Landbay’s Paul Brett says: “There’s no question landlords have needed to be thick-skinned with successive anti-landlord governments and plenty of anti-landlord rhetoric in the national news.

“It’s unfortunate that bad news leads when there are so many positive examples of good landlords working in partnership with tenants to provide quality housing.

“With such a reliance on rented accommodation as part of the wider housing mix in the UK, we need quality landlords more than ever. We also need new entrants too as demand continues to outstrip supply.

“To make this all happen though, the government must champion those good quality landlords and work with the sector, rather than against it. This will hopefully bring a more balanced approach to the national news agenda and relieve some of the pressure felt by honest and hard working landlords across the country.”

The problem is that the media survive on selling stories (clicks or paid) and the story that 90% of landlords are doing a great job isn't much of a story, at least not one that attracts. Now the story of the rogue landlord who charged excessive rent for a health hazard house is a great story.

As it is often said, 'no news is good news".

I'm thick skinned, easily ignore the media.
What concerns me is how the Government are acting towards Landlords. They seem to be easily led by media and by these so called charities like Shelter. Charities need to be carefully scrutinised by Government, over paid and lacking in experience most of them.

I would rather be a despised millionaire landlord than a beloved pauper tenant!

I haven’t got where I am because I cared what people thought of me.

I got great tenants, rent is paid, any issues that are reported, are solved.

Keep safe everyone and have a good weekend 👍

Not been in this industry long and absolutely shocked at how the government is gunning for landlords and getting away with it.
I do agree there are lots of bad landlords (especially in the student accommodation sector. I have witnessed many atrocious places - the LA need to scrutinise that area better).
There are good landlords around. We are certainly one. Hasn't stopped the tenants we've had doing everything possible to destroy our property. No amount of support we give (including being on call) has changed the attitude of the tenants. Who have worked hard to try and destroy our property. There are lots of bad tenants out there, not just 'bad landlords'.

Mrs Byrne, this is standard Tory policy, it's called a shakedown, that's how the conservatives make money. Yes really !

    icon

The old gangsters have been replaced with the new Government gangsters and the current main shakedowns are HMO Licensing and Landlord Registration when it comes to a private house or flat owner wanting to rent his or her flat to consenting tenants and in Scotland the next new shakedown has started with anyone who wants to give someone a short let then he or she needs to apply for a Short Term Let license so he or she can let his or her own private property..even in China they do not have such restrictions on what a private property owner can do with his or her own property !!!

The question is, When did the Conservative party, cease being Conservative. -
I think most people would say quite some time ago.

Boris out good riddance looking after his friends in high places.
His Party put us through 13 years of torture and deceit ending with confiscation of our property ultimately.
Private property privately funded privately owned taken by the State.
His Party presided over Section 21 Gate, fabrication of the Unfairer Renters Reform Kangaroo Bill.
A Witch hunt and Criminalisation of Private Landlords who house 9 million renter’s, dedicated to their Business, pay Billions in taxes to Revenue and local Authorities annually. Contribute Billions more through Refurbishment, Maintenance upkeep, licensing and Compliance, Stamp Duty, local trades, Estate Agents etc……
