Top DJ trolled after social media post about EPC changes

One of Britain's best known DJs has taken to social media to highlight what she sees as the unfair government policy of forcing higher EPC thresholds on properties in the private rental sector.

Liz Kershaw is the UK’s second-longest running female broadcast DJ, behind Annie Nightingale.

She worked for 30 years on BBC Radio and most recently has appeared on the GB News TV channel.

Last week she took to X, the social media forum previously known as Twitter, to say: “Today's my Grandma's birthday. She worked 19 hours a day running a pub until she was 70 & she left me £12K.  I invested it in a buy to let. Now #Michael Gove is forcing me to evict my young tenants from this Victorian terrace because of energy ratings dictated by #NetZero2030.”

Currently, across England and Wales there is a minimum EPC requirement of E. That was set to be lifted to a minimum EPC C by 2028, although Housing Secretary Michael Gove has hinted this may be delayed.

Upgrades to meet the government targets will be costly. Savills estate agency's analysis of EPC recommendations reveals that the cost of fully upgrading properties to a maximum EPC C ranges from £8,807 for a property that is currently an EPC D, to £27,366 for a property currently rated an EPC G.

Kershaw’s tweet has been trolled by opponents of buy to let, including Acorn, the pro-tenants organisation which is part of the Renters Reform Coalition led by another activist group, Generation Rent.

I do not understand why Kershaw, and so many other landlords are getting upset, though I am pleased they are as it highlights the utter stupidity of EPCs. The change in EPC is is a proposal. There are lots of proposals banded about which never see the light of day. If we believe the story about global warming, we will not need central heating therefore insulation.

I think the big story here is not EPC, it is that landlords are constantly the victim of abuse by nazi hate gangs, whili the government tells us that is committed to stopping online abuse

What? More like communist/socialist haters. Non-productive socialism. The Nazis were efficient.

So the story is that 'intelligent' Liz Kershaw has chosen not to steadily reinvest some of her rental income back into this asset to ensure that it's fit for purpose. I wonder if she has upgraded the outside privy and the coal burning range in the kitchen. If she is having to evict her tenants I suspect this unit is EPC Grade F or G. You've got to try very hard to have a house that energy wasteful. No insulation in the loft, no insulation (EWI or IWI) in the front and rear walls and 'dumb' electric heating running off super expensive day-time electricity. This 'young couple' must have been in serious fuel poverty; I hope they didn't have any children. These are the FACTS. Reading some of the comments on X, Kershaw is not 'trolled' (what a puerile 'Daily Mail' thing to write). Her rant is simply destroyed by intelligent and rational comments from thousands of normal people. Perhaps Kershaw should get into a business that she really understands like DJ'ing at parties.

More trolling from Gibbons! Pretty sure she's referring to the proposal of EPC C so her house, like most Victorian terraces, is probably a D. Despite Gibbon's assertion that EPC C is just SO easy to get to with next to no investment, most LLs can't get their older houses to a C without expensive & intrusive work so these houses will be sold by LLs.

Well said Tricia! That is the truth.

oh shut up Gibbons - you are like a stuck record - go & annoy people elsewhere

I have an F rated property with an exsemption, and the loft is insulated, the rent is well below market rent, if the guys in there want heat then they have to turn it on and pay for it, there is no way that I'm spending thousands on that property, and by the way an F and there's no damp or mould as they guys open their upstairs bedroom windows every day summer and winter, they are happy with their low rent living there

    Peter Why Do I Bother

I would rather attend a party that Kershaw's at than one of your EPC reading clubs Martin..!

Can we have a dislike button so we genuine landlods can have a choice of response.

I read the story that her Victorian Terrance has not reached the now minimum of an EPC of E ? So she has decided to evict instead of upgrade 👍🏻 Fair enough, a lot of us will be doing the same if the rules move to a C 🆘🆘

    icon

She refers to Michael Gove - pretty recent Housing Minister - & EPC E has been law for over 2 years now. That is why I assume she is referring to the proposed C grade not the existing E.

Climate change is a hoax wake up

It most definitely is a hoax to enable tax/control/ restrict movement of the plebs. The liberal left ironically always but into this type of nonsense.

Thing is activist groups like this, shelter etcetc their all talk but their not actually helping either, their not providing funding, their not providing homes at all for tenants. So either be part of the solution or be quiet personally.

if the Renters Reform Bill becomes law Shelter, Generation Rent & the Government will all be responsible for many many renters being evicted as it will be illegal to rent a property to them unless it has a 'C' rating - can somebody explain just how we evict them. I wonder how all of the idiots pushing for the renters reform bill to become law will explain to the evicted tenants why they are homeless????? Just how will they find somewhere else to rent when thousands of properties are removed from the market??

these groups are big money making scams for the likes of polly and alike

Andrew fresh air is free, they want to block it out and keep breathing the same air until it’s depleted of oxygen.

My favourite quote of the day in the first comment from Jim -
" If we believe the story about global warming, we will not need central heating therefore insulation."

Seriously you all think climate change is a hoax? are you ignoring the wildfires? what about the steady growth in greenhouse gasses since the start of the industrial revolution? Yes climate has changed in the past but under normal conditions it takes millions of years to change. have you considered this might just be cognitive dissonance? Nobody likes change, especially if it is super inconvenient.

Martin, in truth i'm not sure anybody knows. Our records are too knew to have any scientific basis. As an example it is well documented that the Roman's grew grapes in the vicinity of Hadrian's Wall. However, today these vines would not survive. Archaeologists apparently have proved this. This data is some 1800 years older than the 200 years that we have records.
    Hence the scepticism.
The terrible wildfires could be simply down to a weather system that happens, like our long hot Summer of 1976.
However, I'm not one to force my opinion so make of this what you will. I do think being on the side of caution is a good approach, but in a Sensible way.

    Peter Why Do I Bother

Come on Martin we all know there is climate change just like there has been since this mortal coil began.

However most of those wildfires have been started by idiots (accident or on purpose?) and is it not a coincidence that they all started at the same time, around the time it was reported that this kind of event was down 90% on the previous 100 years. I am not a conspiracy theorist but it's kinda strange don't you think....
